Mule deer

Odocoileus hemionus · Mammal · Common in San Diego County

Default for wild mammals: logged quietly
Sample: changes are not saved

When startled, the mule deer makes its getaway in springy leaps, all four legs landing and launching as one. The West’s everyday deer, it is named for ears as big as a mule’s and has a short white tail dipped in black at the end. It usually browses at dawn and dusk, and the Pacific coast’s black-tailed deer counts as the same species.
