California ground squirrel

Otospermophilus beecheyi · Mammal · Common in San Diego County

Default for wild mammals: logged quietly
Sample: changes are not saved

Faced with a rattlesnake, the California ground squirrel stands its ground and flags its tail. It may even chew shed snakeskin and lick it into its fur to mask its own scent. By day this mottled, bushy-tailed squirrel of West Coast fields stays near its burrow, often perched on a rock or mound to keep watch.
