Red-tailed hawk
Buteo jamaicensis · Bird · Common in San Diego County
Default for birds: logged quietly
Sample: changes are not saved
On most adults a brick-red tail is the red-tailed hawk’s calling card, and a handy one, since the rest of the bird can range from nearly white to almost black. North America’s most familiar hawk spends long stretches on light poles and field edges, waiting for a rodent to show itself. Many pairs hold the same territory year after year.
