Great horned owl

Bubo virginianus · Bird · Uncommon in San Diego County

Default for birds: logged quietly
Sample: changes are not saved

Skunks are a regular meal for the great horned owl, as for few other hunters; strong talons help, and so does a nose that barely registers the smell. This big, tufted owl lives almost everywhere in the US, deserts and city parks included, hoots deeply after dark and often nests in the dead of winter, while most birds wait for spring.
