House finch

Haemorhous mexicanus · Bird · Common in San Diego County

Default for birds: logged quietly
Sample: changes are not saved

Now common at feeders coast to coast, house finches started out as western birds and spread across the East after caged birds were released in New York around 1940. The red on a male’s head and chest is a report card of sorts: how bright it is depends on what he eats. They often nest in hanging plants and door wreaths.
