The desert cottontail is the everyday rabbit of the Southwest and western plains, from California to Texas and north into Montana. Its ears are a bit longer than an eastern cottontail’s, handy for shedding heat, and it’s usually out at dawn and dusk, grazing near shrubs and bolting with a flash of white tail.
