Mourning dove

Zenaida macroura · Bird · Common in San Diego County

Default for birds: logged quietly

Plenty of people hear a mourning dove’s mournful coo and think it’s an owl. This slim, soft-brown dove with a long pointed tail is one of the most widespread birds in the US, and it usually feeds on seeds on the ground, often in pairs. Listen, too, for the whistle of its wings on takeoff.
